Musings

I have not had an entirely stable life of late, with two jobs each not giving me sufficient hours and the uncertainty which goes with that. I did get Distrohoppers' Digest out last week (with Tony Hughes and Dale Miracle), but I think I need to forego mintCast today.

I've had some interesting finds on my multiboot System76 Kudu 3. I currently have 7 distros on it, on a 1 Tb SSD. Manjaro boots only when Manjaro owns GRUB, but otherwise boots to a black screen, no cursor, no way to reboot except by holding the power button down. I can solve this by leaving boot with Mint or OpenMandriva but holding down F7 at boot time if I want to boot Manjaro, or by giving Manjaro the boot (not my favorite boot screen, but at least they try).

I also found that, for whatever reason, PCLinuxOS will not accept my wifi login password at work. Works at home just fine. That login works for my 6 other distros. It's a very weak login password, made so that all these non-technical students and teachers can remember it. (Same password at every school in the county.) At most sites my VPN works after logging in, but not all. Even so, I have no clue why PCLinuxOS will not accept it at all. I've posted to their forum.

Current residents of my drive, which you may have mostly deduced by now, are Linux Mint 20 MATE, PCLinuxOS MATE, Manjaro 20.2 Cinnamon, OpenMandriva Lx 4.1 (Plasma), Pop!_OS 20.10, and also Bodhi 5.1 and the prealpha Bodhi 6.

My desktop features 6 partitions, and I'm not sure whether I can remember what is on it. There is at least one open partition. I tried installing PCLinuxOS on my desktop (an old HP Z400 workstation), but it claims it won't work with UEFI (odd, as I have an EFI partition on the laptop and it loaded fine there).

I'm trying to decide which distro to review for the next Distrohoppers' Digest... I have a very short list of 3 distros to look at, and none of them may work with my somewhat-limited skillset.

In mundane news, I need to find a dremel kit to work on my new dentures, the dentist's office just doesn't understand one of my major issues and I could fix it myself with the right tool. I have two days' work so far for this coming week, and one day for the following week. Some calls come in on Sunday or even Saturday, some come in at the beginning of the workday. This week should be fairly good, but next week has a 3-day school holiday around Thanksgiving. My other job wants me to travel on my first available open day.
