Installing Slackware 12.2 On An Old Dell Laptop - Part IVa

Posted 09-10-2009 at 02:18 PM by stuartd

A friend found a suitable power supply. So the laptop is up and running again.
I haven't done any more than hunt around on the 'net, in forums and news groups, and read Slackbook and more from Absolute BSD. All very useful stuff but I haven't found an answer that satisfies my need to understand what's going on.
I could simply ask on the forums what files I need to edit and how, but that wouldn't be entirely satisfactory unless it came with an explanation of what's going on.
I've been looking at the layered description of networking and computing and I think that I have to find out how to get the hardware to communicate with the OS.
I know the Xircom card registers with the machine because I booted it without the card in and checked dmesg then inserted the card and got a line added to dmesg saying that the card had been inserted in pcmcia slot 0.
I think I still have some configuring to do of the pcmcia module so that xirc2ps will be recognised as eth0.
I can't do any more with the laptop for a couple of weeks because I shall be busy, so I'll have to wait to find out what I need to do.
