Explain Shell

Posted 09-04-2013 at 12:35 AM by Pyplate

I found a great site for decoding Linux commands: http://explainshell.com/explain/ls?args=-la

You can type in commands and arguments, and it tells you what the options do.

Apache performance tuning

Posted 08-23-2013 at 07:10 PM by Pyplate

I've spent the last few days tuning Apache. I've achieved quite a good performance increase, mostly by disabling unused modules. In tests with siege, my cluster can now handle over 900 transactions per second. Here's the full article on server cluster tuning.

Raspberry Pi Server Cluster Performance

Posted 08-15-2013 at 04:36 PM by Pyplate

I've done some testing on my cluster. 4 Pies is definitely better than one, there's a big difference in performance between a single Pi and a 4 node cluster. You can read more detail here: server cluster testing.

As you'd expect, a cluster of four Raspberry Pies isn't that powerful, but setting it up has been interesting. It can handle a surprising amount of traffic - I got 2800 visits from Reddit yesterday. The minimum page load time is over a second (as tested on my local network),...

I finally got around to doing it. I've set up a 4 node Raspberry Pi cluster. It's not that powerful, but setting it up has been good practice.

I used an old PC running Lubuntu as a load balancer. I just installed Apache and I'm using Apache's balancer module. I installed Lubuntu because I'm using a very old PC that has 512MB of RAM. The PC is more powerful than the cluster, but if I just used the PC as a server, I wouldn't have learned anything about load balancing.

Articles about CGI scripting in Python

Posted 07-29-2013 at 09:13 PM by Pyplate

Since I changed my domain name I've been seeing a lot more traffic on my site. I've been doing some link building and updating old links.

I've also written articles about using Google charts in python scripts and using forms with Python CGI scripts.

My Odroid has arrived. It's got a quad core ARM cortex A9 running at 1.7GHz. Now I just need to get my hands on a power supply that I can use with it.
