Before that done 6 years of system administration including a SCO UNIX Server and a couple of Windows Servers and dozens of workstations. The largest system was nearly 100 PC's, devices etc. at 3 locations with LAN and VPN's, Firewall and Phone via landline and VoIP.

Have fun, and maybe share your knowledge with me.

Updated 12-18-2015 at 05:27 PM by error_401 (Updated information)

I have a lot of pictures stored on CD-ROM's which over time start to loose data.
I want to recover as much data as possible and store it on my NAS. I have assembled my experience in this blog sort of a tutorial and reference.

1. Install ddrescue (gddrescue)
2. How it works - Manuals
3. Figure out your devices and prepare ddrescue
4. Use it on a damaged CD-ROM (data loss due bad sectors)
5. Recover as much data from data CD-ROM as possible

Major disk trouble DRDY ERR and UNC error

Just happened:

Got a nasty error on my laptop running Debian Squeeze. Unable to boot further than initramfs with errors preventing the file system from mounting.

Nasty bugger. Seems to be a bad sector on my HDD. Causes several attempts to read and finally fails with
DRDY ERR and subsequent UNC error triggering the errors:
unable to mount rootfs etc.

Now trying with the installer CD-ROM in recovery mode. A bit nasty as I have unsaved data...

Updated: see at end of article

Had some time to fiddle with my netbook lately.

As I use it only for work abroad to connect to the internet and listen to music it was not a priority to change the OS on that one too. And sometimes it comes in handy to have a native Windows System running somewhere.

So I decided on setting up LINUX Debian 6.0 Squeeze to dual boot with Windows XP SP3.

First I had to generate a bootable USB stick following...

Since I've got a new compact digital camera about a year ago I have the trouble that it's internal format is .MTS

.MTS ? What the heck is that? A question a lot of people will come up with as not all of us are the video cracks and sooo knowledgeable about all that stuff.

So - what would work under Linux to do something useful with all your videos having an .mts format?

Searches will lead you to ffmpeg a very powerful tool for video conversion. But unless...

aaargh - Windows

Have to get this off my head.

Today 2022-12-20 I've spent 2 1/2 hours on installing Windows 10 and 35 minutes on Linux.

As I had this nice Fujitsu Lifebook I wanted it to run my usual flavor of Linux the Debian 11. So today I had some time to spend over lunch. It was a treat with the knowledge on how to prepare the laptop.

The 25 minutes in Windows 8 to prep the laptop, remove all locks and change the boot order in the BIOS.

Then it booted...
