SheevaPlug
Tried again and failed. Still getting that mass/mess of letters and symbols after loading the kernel message. Looks like it's reading the kernel rather than loading it. Did find someone with the same problem, but he used Windows to solve it.

Very reluctant to go down that road. I'll try again sometime, when I'm in the right mood.
Desktop computer knackered
Hardware problems. First the DVD drawer developed a life of its own: opening at random, and not staying closed. Then the intake fan started sounding like a model airplane. Probably needs a good cleaning out, but I'm having a struggle getting the sides off without wrecking everything. Back to the shop, maybe?
ebook readers
Didn't like the idea when they first came out, but I've read and heard quite a few good opinions of them since then. So I bought a Kindle, and I must admit, I like it.

@ SheevaPlug... didn't look like there was anything you couldn't do with linux there. minicom can be used on linux to connect to serial ports.
@ Desktop Computer
I know the feeling. A resistor on my mother board fried about a month ago. I have an AM2 socket processor and DDR2 ram. So I was either forced to do an expensive upgrade, or just buy a cheap $50 replacement board to get back up and running.
@ebook readers
Black and White or color? If I was going for just an ebook reader, I would buy a digital paper one... not that I go out side much. Getting a tablet would just be a distraction ;PPosted 08-18-2011 at 08:34 AM by lumak -

It's just black and white (or light grey, with a greenish tinge, to me). Very easy on the eyes.Posted 08-18-2011 at 10:47 AM by brianL -
Finally managed to get the sides off my desktop computer. It wasn't very dusty, but I cleaned it out. The fan's still noisy, and the DVD drawer is still malfunctioning, so I'll probably take it back to where I bought it to be fixed.

A better-late-than-never update:
I fitted a new intake fan in my desktop: a Xilence Red Wing - nice and quiet now. The DVD drawer is behaving, too - fingers crossed, touch wood, etc.Posted 11-18-2011 at 05:57 PM by brianL
