Don't click random links!

"Don't click random links". It's advice you see posted from time to time, but the entire Web is a collection of random links. You never know what you're going to get with any of it, until you get it!

"Turn off javascript" is advice I understand, "Don't click random links" might as well be "Don't use the web".

Unfortunately, "Turn off Javascript" is rapidly becoming "Can't use the web" thanks to idiot web...

Linux Journal re-runs the Editor Wars.

Vim: 35%
GNU Emacs: 19%

So, probably no surprise there to anyone.

I think Emacs suffers because it has some bad initial behaviours and some awkward or hard to remember key strokes. These can mostly be fixed of course through customisation but it takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention learning a little elisp along the way!

Up until recently I was a 'vi' kind of guy, 'elvis'...

This entertaining and rightfully sarcastic presentation from fosdem 18 is a must see for anyone who has had to suffer through building other people's programs from source. It certainly resonated with me as a Slackware user.

Coding for Carrots - google doodle.

Coding for Carrots or here if you just want the doodle itself without the rest of the page.

I had a lot of fun playing with this one today,

Worth noting, that to get the award for "shortest solution" refers to the shortest program, not the most efficient number of hops the bunny takes. That threw me for a while.

Anyway, go try it out, it's fun.

Distraction free writing?

Posted 12-03-2017 at 11:08 AM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

I really don't understand what these text editors that specialise in
'Distraction free writing' are all about. I use emacs and I just type
into a blank screen. I use vi/vim and similarly I just type into a
blank screen.

I don't get it... where's the distraction: M-x tetris?
