OpenBSD: Impact of disabled SMT

A couple of weeks ago, OpenBSD announced that they would be disabling Simultaneous Multi Threading (SMT) a.k.a HyperThreading on Intel CPUs over security fears related to side-channel attacks on the cache (much like those of recent Specter fame). Well, I've just updated my OpenBSD 6.3 partition to a -current snapshot that includes the new protection(s) and the results are blog-worthy, so here we go...

"Don't click random links". It's advice you see posted from time to time, but the entire Web is a collection of random links. You never know what you're going to get with any of it, until you get it!

"Turn off javascript" is advice I understand, "Don't click random links" might as well be "Don't use the web".

Unfortunately, "Turn off Javascript" is rapidly becoming "Can't use the web" thanks to idiot web...

I think Emacs suffers because it has some bad initial behaviours and some awkward or hard to remember key strokes. These can mostly be fixed of course through customisation but it takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention learning a little elisp along the way!

This entertaining and rightfully sarcastic presentation from fosdem 18 is a must see for anyone who has had to suffer through building other people's programs from source. It certainly resonated with me as a Slackware user.
