New kernel boot: no initial console found

Hey,

I've just tried to compile a fresh 2.4.21 kernel, which went smoothly with no problems, until the reboot...

When I reboot, I get a warning: no initial console found. message, and then the system preceeds to reboot.

Is this somthing to do with the way that Arch has arranged the TTYs? since they all seem to be symlinks to /dev/vc/1 2 3 4 etc.

I've tried removing the symlink to tty1 and making a fresh one with mknod tty1 c 4 1 (is that right?)

but no luck, this also caused a problem that when I try to log in as root (using the existing 2.4.20 kernel) on this tty, it says the password is incorrect

do I have to change an option in the kernel source somewhere before compiling or is there an arch-specific kernel source that I've missed along the lines, or just somthing really obvious that I've overlooked?

thx.

I'd actually have to guess this is a problem with DevFS, or rather lack of it in the kernel. During your recompile did you include support for /dev filesystem? If not, that's likely your problem.

Cool

Well I've tried what you said but it didn't seem to fix the problem, however, I've come up with my own solution, which is kind of a hack...

if I use append="init=/sbin/init" in lilo.conf, it gives the error, but then proceeds to boot up anyway, but I have to mash the space bar until the PS/2 controller is initialised, otherwise I can't log in.

I don't think this should be a permanent fix, so I'm still open to ways of fixing it! :S

I shouldn't have to edit /etc/devfsd.conf should I? I would have thought arch would have set everything correctly in there. (?)

thx.

I don't think you should have to either. Check your append line to make sure you are mounting your devfs as well (look at the older/working/other line to match it up).

Cool

Are you sure you have the "Automatically mount at boot" option set as well?
