New projects: Xfce and GTK themes, also, setting up a grphical login...

so, i installed Xfce 4.0.5, got the gtk themes working, but now i have a small problem: i installed gtksee ( a small image viewer) and it does not pick up my gtk theme... i changed it with gtk theme switch, and i am thinking maybe that changed only the gtk2 theme, so i am wondering how to change my gtk1 theme...

oh, and also, does anyone know how to setup XDM? i have read some articles but they are not very clear...

I think gtk1 has no themes, hence gtk2.
XDM should work, just by editing /etc/inittab and changing:
id:3:initdefault:
to ...
id:4:initdefault:
At one time I had included WDM, the Wings Display Manager. You can get it here (search wdm for slack-9.1):
http://www.linuxpackages.net/
That's a prettier rewrite of xdm with no extra depends.
In /etc/rc.d/rc.4 you can change the entry for xdm orduplicate it and change it to wdm. Try it without the -nodaemon flag at first. That makes it harder to kill the process.

there is a tool called gtk-theme-switch that you can use to change the gtk 1 and 2 themes on your desktop.

so... a problem and a question...

the problem: i have wdm installed, ant it shows at startup, but when i login, it says "validating", the screen goes blank, and then i goes back to the login screen... it is an endless loop...

the question: how do i add window managers to the wdm list? i want to add fluxbox and xfce

Look in the included files for a folder with Slackware config files. I think these are installed, but there is some explanation also in there.
you can always run pktool and choose 'view...' to see where the docs and man/info pages are. I may work on this in a few days, as it is may be included in AmigoXP.

added xfce to the menu, but still can't login as user...

maybve it has something to do with permissions...

here is part of the error log:

Quote:
AUDIT: Sun Dec 12 13:19:16 2004: 199 X: client 5 rejected from local host
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
apparently the X server is refusing the connection...
