problem installing bash..


hi,

is it like only the administrator can install bash on a AIX server? or it can be done by the person who has got his own accont on the server onto his own account...
and if the user can install how is it done???

pls help....

Most administrators take a dim view of users installing software especially since it usually ends up in your home directory. That is because they usually end up being the ones who have to support it. Also if you test some new process/procedure using an atypical user environment then roll it out to Production and it quits working its going to cause headaches for you and the admins.

Also many companies have policies expressly forbidding it (and some even have policies forbidding any 3rd party or FOSS software that has gone through an approval process).

I'd suggest you explain the reasons you need bash to your admins and ask them to install it. They may actually install it for you or be able to provide you with another way to do what you want.

What specifically are you trying to do in bash that you can't do in ksh (Korn Shell)?
