One of my friends has uninstalled Telegram on Jan 01. Signal is still the most common here (although both Telegram and Element are slowly improving); and the number of users is important in messengers, sadly. So, Signal it is.

Signal here too. My family & work have started using it quite a while ago.
Unfortunately they continue to use WhatsApp, too. A work colleague recently contacted another colleague on WA even though we're all in the work group on Signal

Threema

I prefer to use Threema, because it doesn't reveal your phone number.

But cannot be used without installation on an Internet-connected Android or iOS.

Exactly! And you are able to manage your keys (i.e. exporting, importing), instead of reverting to SMS based authentication after each phone change or app reinstall.

Matrix protocol (element for instance) do not depend on a phone number either.
