One of my friends has uninstalled Telegram on Jan 01. Signal is still the most common here (although both Telegram and Element are slowly improving); and the number of users is important in messengers, sadly. So, Signal it is.
Signal here too. My family & work have started using it quite a while ago.
Unfortunately they continue to use WhatsApp, too. A work colleague recently contacted another colleague on WA even though we're all in the work group on Signal

Matrix protocol (element for instance) do not depend on a phone number either.
