I've believe I've warned you in the past regarding posts like this. We do not tolerate negativity and non-constructive posts. Trying to be positive here since this thread is going on a bit. I wouldn't normally post to a question that has been asked so many times before but this is my little stand against elitists who are always negative.
I run OpenBSD as my firewall,DHCP server, and it also runs NAT for me. Setting it up was newbie friendly since there wasn't any GUI stuff at all but w/ the OpenBSD FAQ, it was simple and straightforward. Once it was up and running, it was simplicity itself to read the man pages and setup a stateful packet filtering firewall. Figuring out how to setup NAT and a DHCP server took about 2-3 mnutes including reading the man pages. Man pages are so much better in the BSDs. They are written w/ the aim that you can set everything up using the man page. Patching was incredibly easy as well thanks to the well written documentation. I would say OpenBSD is harder to use initially but it grows on you w/ its straightforward purpse to be the most secure OS in the world.

i was also wondering what to run on my home pc once i get my laptop which will run linux, i will prolly just leave slack on it but i think bsd is an approach

FreeSD is the best for your desktop but OpenBSD is easier to use and more secure than a Linux router or firewall.

FreeBSD and Linux are friends? = I read different on linuxisforbitches.com ;o)
