New OpenBSD install freezes

HI all,

I installed OBSD from the CD instal image as per the instructions at openbsd.org. It reported that the installation had been successful, but when I rebooted at the end of the process, my laptop locks up with a snowstorm effect on the screen. Tried installing the same CD on a second laptop and all went well so am wondering if there's a hardware incompatibility with laptop 1 here somewhere. Can anyone see any possible problems from the results of this hw query below?

Well it could be unsupported hardware. What architecture did you install?

Well it's a SiS chipset and they do have a bit of a reputation - other than that no clue.

Try posting your thread at daemonforums.org as well, as more OpenBSD users hang out there.

SiS is actually fairly stable and reliable, at least from my history with them.

Did you burn the media on the fastest/optimial setting of your burner's software?

Just a side note, but I've had issues with Free/PC-BSD on a laptop as well. BSD actually is, from my history with them, a bit iffy on laptops.

I am aware of the speed limitations one gets with some burners/disks so always go for half the recommended/claimed speed at most.
BTW, whilst initially appearing to install no problem on the other laptop, that install has since gone tits-up as well, which is disappointing. Perhaps 5.4 is flaky? Or maybe just doesn't like laptops!

I can conclusively say that 5.4 is not flaky as I run it on two boxes. It may indeed be the case that it does not like some aspect of your laptop hardware.

I've never had luck getting any BSD distribution installed on any laptop. Chances are it's your laptop.

Laptops seem to be a problem for Linux as well. There's a compatibility list on the web somewhere. Maybe the BSD developers should create one, too, if they haven't already.

It's hard to say for sure what it is, but if you're experiencing freezing at boot time, disabling ACPI is the first step to see if it loads.

When you're at the boot prompt, type boot -c.

Code:

boot> boot -c

Then disable acpi and exit.

Code:

UKC> disable acpi
UKC> exit

See if it gets any further. If it still freezes, disable acpi and apm on the next boot.

with sis chipsets it works to disable sisagp. That's what needs to be done to get my recently acquired Dell Optiplex FX160 to work with OpenBSD 5.7
