Hi everybody,
some weeks ago I installed OpenBSD 3.9 for i386 on an old PC that I have (but no so terribly old: it's a P3 550MHz with 192 MBs of RAM and a 40GB harddisk).
But, after a few hours the PC was on (performing some network tasks), I found the machine totally freezed. The reset button was the only way out.
This trouble happened 3 or 4 times (each one with consistent fs checks during the reboot after a crash), but the last time something "destroyed" the kernel and I couldn't get to the login prompt anymore. Oh, please note that I haven't found any interesting information in system logs.
So, I tried to discover what's happened by using an old Knoppix 3.3 LiveCD, and it freezed too, but before I got the following message (Linux seems to be more "chatty" about messages):
Code:
... kernel: eth0: PCI Bus error 2290
this made me realize that the problem was probably the network card, and somewhere I read that the error message I got is typical for some Realtek 8139 cards (infact, in my OpenBSD box I have a Realtek 8139...).
So I changed it with another network card, a VIA Rhine III, and moved it to another PCI slot (just in case the previous PCI slot was broken), and yesterday I reinstalled OpenBSD again.
It worked fine all day, but this morning I found the machine freezed again!!! AAAAAAARGH!!!
How could I discover and understand what's the matter with my box? Any suggestions or ideas?
I'm going mad!
Many thanks in advance to everybody!
