Which OS? Which version?

On my OpenBSD 3.3 system I can use the command 'md5'. Other hashes can be given by 'sha1' or 'rmd160'.

Example:

[sancho@molodetz:/usr/local/sbin]$ md5 *
MD5 (cfagent) = 07a96e70e749624c14cd9054094cc33e
MD5 (cfdoc) = 38db76af6fc77f32965c2a703c2b9376
MD5 (cfenvd) = 6bbb8cad939ac3ed697f6958c18ec7c9
MD5 (cfenvgraph) = 648f894a9ab10b174e3257cc2cef0611
