Installing BSD on a slave driver

I want to try FreeBSD and OpenBSD but realised that i have to install both of them in a primary partition. Since all my primary partiton is occupied by XP and also am afraid to use any tool to resize my partition thought to install a second hard drive as a slave driver. Now my question is can i install FreeBSD or OpenBSD on a slave driver? IS there any problem in booting from a slave driver? Any special tricks that i need to know in order to do this?
thanks
