Slow kernel boot

I got a new laptop and installed Zenwalk on it. To my surprise everything worked right out of the box. However since nothing is perfect, I do have a couple of problems:

1) The kernel starts very slow. I get the text "Loading zenwalk" (or something like that) and then those dots. Each dot takes nearly a second to appear Slackware's kernel booted _much_ faster on a slower machine, so I'm thinking there must be something wrong with this. Once the kernel is up, the system performs as it should.

2) GDM only lets me login every other time?! I.e. Login->Logout->Login displays boot messages and returns to GDM login-screen instead of opening a session. After that login works again.

Any ideas on these?

I got it fixed by adding 'compact' option to lilo.conf Now only the gdm problem remains.

I can use it and I can also post to zenwalk forums. Which I did. And got the answer. I think what you have seen there must be my post.

I managed to "fix" the gdm problem by adding AlwaysRestartServer=true to /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf under [daemon] section. This will cause the X-server to restart on every logout. For now this is ok, but I'll keep on searching for a better solution.

--Edit--

There is a better fix for this at:
http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php....html#msg38079

So:

Option "AIGLX" "off"

in the ServerFlags section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf fixes the problem completely
