Vector Linux 6 "Light" Live CD released....

Vector has always been a pretty nice Slackware-based distro....and the "light" edition has been small and fast. Now it's a Live CD,..which (of course) means that you can just run it from the CD and have a look at it first, before deciding to install. Or,..one can just keep using it from the CD, I suppose.

I think one of the reasons that the Vector Linux forum on Linuxquestions.org is fairly quiet,...is that I have found that I need very little assistance with the distro. At least it doesn't give me very many problems to speak of.

That's true. I installed VectorLinux 6.0 DeLuxe on my notebook and I succeed in configuring anything. I think this is due to the great support offered from the Slackware community, even here at LQ: I found any answer to my questions without asking them! VectorLinux is a really really nice distribution. Moreover, it has the great advantage it runs on older machines with a very little amount of memory.

Yeah,..you're right! I have the "Standard" edition (not the "Light") running on an older PIII Dell Optipex,...and it's pretty fast. I really don't know why they say Vector "isn't for newbies"...because I haven't had very many problems with it at all.

Maybe... because it's based on Slackware?!

Have just acquired a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop and wonder if anyone has had success installing Vector or Vector Lite on one?

You came to the right thread. The best way to test your hardware is to use the live cd mentioned at the start of the thread. It will boot and run VectorLinux Light from the cd/dvd drive. This does not make any changes to the existing installation you may have. It does give you the chance to see how Vector will work with the hardware on that machine. Light would be the right choice for a pIII machine like this. How much memory and hard drive space did yours ship with? The specs I looked up varied.
That being said, my money is on Vector, great hardware recognition on this distro.

Get the download here...
VL6.0-Light-LIVE-Final.iso

If you decide to go ahead with an install I'd recommend using the VL6.0-Light non-live version.
You can get that here...
VL6.0-Light-Final.iso

If you want to see how the installation goes check that out here...
