I have not used it so cannot comment. Wont hurt to try it out. There are other windows managers out there that you can try, fluxbox etc.

What people think of xfce is pretty individual I'd think. I'd recommend just installing it and seeing what you think.

Xubuntu's nice enough, but it is a *lot* slower than an XFCE install on a Debian Sarge system.

You can do a server install and the install xfce and the programs you need or you can
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get install xfce4
which is what I did. I recommend the server install, but if you don't want to reinstall your whole operating system, you can try the latter.
another option that has already been mentioned is
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
