winetools doesnt install when using synaptic

well i tried installing wine on my first new linux box. the OS im using is ubuntu. i went to the wine site and did everything there but when i try to install using synaptic, i get an error ,winetools is requires xdialog and gtk-smooth-themes which are not installed. i looked around on the internet but i only found winetools 1.3(not the most up to date). which doesnt need to be installed. i just works rite after extracting it. i found xdialog too but i dont know how to install it. Since i just started using linux like 3 days ago. im completely pure noob rite now and i hate to admitt it. i was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. i need help on how installing any programs from the console. much thanks for those who help me.

Since you are using a Debian based distribution, you can install most anything you need using apt. There is no need to manually extract, compile, and install. First, enable "universe" repository in the file /etc/apt/sources.list. Type:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
to edit it uncomment the lines that end in universe: http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/HowT...erseRepository

Next run:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Now if you need to install wine, just do:
Code:
sudo apt-get install wine
also notice other suggested and recommended packages. You might want to install them too.

i tried what you said and i worked up until the point it tells me that i require xdialog and gtk-smooth-themes.

Reading package lists... Done
root@ubuntu:~# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
root@ubuntu:~# apt-get install winetools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
winetools: Depends: xdialog but it is not installable
Depends: gtk-smooth-themes but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

i was wondering if there was a possible package that i could download. plz let me know. thanks for all your help.

Winetools is not available in the standard debian/ubuntu reposutories. Tru editing /etc/apt/sources.list again:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
and add the following line: Then do
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install winetools
See if that works. Hope that helps. More information here: http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

This is the exact problem I had when following a dvdshrink, dvddecrypter setting up in wine. Tried enabling all repositories and also sourceforge one. Still got same error as you. So the solution is:
install winetksetup
then run
winesetup

for me info see my guide for dvdshrink in ubuntu
