Ubuntu is really most like Windows XP.

Exept it's free. And it seldom (or in my case never) crashes. And it's more easily customizable. And it's pretty much virus free. And it can run as a server with little modification. And every time you update it you don't have to reboot it. Oh, and you can play Frozen Bubbles on it.

Personaly I find XP to be quite unstable, headstrong, inflexible and, of course, expensive.

I imagine you mean they are similar in 'ease of use' , and I may just have to agree on that count. It took me five (yes '5') tries to get ubuntu up and running on my system and after reading up on the distro it turned out I needed numerous patches and updates to make it do what other ditros did for me out of the box. Ubuntu stil has a long way to go before it becomes what it set out to be!

Virus and linux are two words that would easily be put in the same sentence. Really, the only time you need antivirus software in linux is when a linux box is connected to a windows box.

Provided you install the pertinent packages, setting up a server is easy in most big distros.

Not having to reboot after updating software (but of course yes after a kernel upgrade) is a characteristic of any linux system ( and a few other free OSes as well) and as for 'frozen bubble', once again, you're talking abou 'linux' not only ubuntu.

Welcome to linux Ben. I hope you enjoy your Ubuntu distro, but when you've learned how to use it, have a look at some other distros and see what's out there!

Heh, Actually I was being a bit fat...faci...fatci...(www.dictionary.com . . . ) facetious. As in, Ubuntu (and linux in general) is what XP aspires to be. Of course, this doesn't always come across that well in text only formats.

Cheers!
