What do I need to stream files from the internet.

So I am fairly new to the Ubuntu Universe.
I have come pretty far from where I started, but still have so far to go.

The only thing I need to get my laptop to exactly where I want it is to be able to play media files from Firefox.

Things like Youtube Videos or Music from ProjectPlaylist or music from Myspace.

I just want to know what I need to do to be able to access those files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

... you want the restricted media packages, follow the instructions there.

You'll also want to look at the plugins for firefox - by default, insecure stuff is not installed. Tools > Add-ons.

For a very big list of stuff to do, check out:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy

... but do not use automatix. As much as that "sudo apt-get install xyz" is a PITA, at least you know what it's doing. When automatix and easyubuntu and such ilk stuff up, it's anybodies guess what it's done.

With long repetitions, just use the up arrow and backspace over the last part of the command. Type in the new part and hit enter. Not hard.

Install the package named "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from the Ubuntu multiverse repository. The easiest way is to run System-> Administration-> Synaptic Package Manager, do a search on the package name, click the check box to select and then click the apply button. This alone will give you most if not all of what you want.

Let me start by saying thanks to the both of you.
It is nice coming to a new OS and finding the help as easy as I can.

The reason I ditched Windows and made the switch to Ubuntu was simply because Windows was screwing up my computer whenever I played media files or movies on my computer, and the warranty is up on the computer so th only option to fix it was to go to something that doesn't have many problems if you know kinda what you are doing.

Anyway.

The problem was solved by installing Wine and just getting the Windows version of Firefox.
The Flash Plugin works for it and not Ubuntu.
I have no Idea why.

I already had the Ubuntu-Restricted Extras installed so that wasn't the problem.
But it still helped me eliminate and find out what it wasn't.
All a part of Troubleshooting..

Thanks Again.

Firefox flash plugin works for me in Ubuntu - it is macromedia shockwave that doesn't work. You realise that using the windows firefox in an insecure way like that opens your box to windows malware?

Did you follow any of the links?

or you can try cleaning it up a little bit and download the binary package from adobe flash sites again ... i mean that one you need to click on that "Extract Here" when you right click on the flash binary installation package downloaded onto your ubuntu desktop ... can just press "enter" in your terminal if i remember correctly ...

//btw ... why you need shockwave(what is that ??) ... i think you have strange friends ... linux is good in this , it helps you narrow all of them down a lot for your own good ...

I am not worried about the Malware.
I use the regular Firefox and when there is something that I can't see or something I can just use the windows Firefox.

I will still screw around and see if I can't get Ubuntu to work with it.
But until then, this is a temporary fix.

A Linux version of Shockwave doesn't exist.

Riight... you may not mind running a botnet client from wine, but the rest of us do. (Where is that cluebat?!) You do, at least, switch these "features" off by default?

... wine security

There are also viruses that can attack linux systems from wine... I have a thread about them on here someplace. They are not too bad-ass at the mo though.. Probably because they have little payoff for the effort required. Do look after your own security.

infact all these can be switched off when you dont need them , only have them on when you know that the place where you want to surf into need them to function properly ... you have no choice ...

other than that , if you happen to hit on a site where you can only see blank page ... it doesnt matter ...

actually doing this is not so much about internet sercurity ...
