Hey, I think I've messed up and I don't know enough about linux to weave my way out of it!
I need serious help.
I had Kubuntu and Windows XP home installed on my computer. Now, I ran out of space on my Windows C: partition so I decided to use Partition Magic to move space from the D: drive and the Linux drive. Anyways, When the Partition Magic was making the changes, it rebooted and when I attempt to boot into Windows or Kubuntu, all I get is this message:
Updating ECS...
Grub 1.5
Please Wait...
Error 15
Now, the problem dosn't end there. I don't know much about these situations so I did a full recovery on the C: drive and still no access. Therefore, I attempted to reinstall Kubuntu from the bootable CD and it freezez everytime at 27%. Furthermore, I also attempted to install via text mode and it said something about --no kernal to install - it was to quick for me too read before it vanished.
Right now I am using the Kubuntu CD just to gain access to the net and I'm so lost that I could really use somebodies help to guide me in the right direction to fixing this mess. I seriously need this computer for studies and I never intended for this to happen. There's another problem, I downloaded Windows set-up boot disks but it finally prompts for a Windows CD, which I don't have and never got with my computer (I only received recovery disks which contain the windows install but the set-up didn't recogrnise them as a XP cd)
When you tried to reinstall, did you delete all of your linux partitions? It sounds like partition magic may have messed up grub.
Did you totaly whipe out windows too?
I guess i would do this, run a repair install of windows. Basicly boot off of the windows xp cd select install. The cd will then scan the drive for any existing windows installs. If it finds one it will ask you if you would like to to a repair. Select R or what ever letter they have for repair. This will also setup the default boot loader, whipping out grub. Once you get windows running, i would then try to install kubuntu, but make sure that you delete all of the linux partitions when you do the install.

Link above is an article about using bootmagic and Redhat, you will have to adjust for versions but it should be a start. I haven't used it before so I can't really comment on whether or not it will work with this distro. As for grub, that is if you want to learn more about it take a look at this http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...part=1&chap=10 If you want to post your /boot/grub/menu.lst I'm sure we can help you decipher it.
I need your help. I would like to remove (K)Ubuntu and grub altogether; meaning all I want installed on my computer is Windows XP. How do I remove (K)Ubuntu and grub so that I have no booting issues - just how my comp was without (K)Ubuntu?
That will remove grub as your bootloader. You will have to install all or your upates again though.
Then once you get into windows format the partition you had (K)Ubuntu on. You can do that through Windows disk manager.
You could also just do a complete reinstall of Windows XP. make sure you delete all of the partitions and create a new one. I'm guessing this isn't something you would like to do, but it is an option.
