Error 17 GRUB Loading stage 1.5, please wait. No kybrd/touch pad response, newSuse101
Can not boot from Suse 10.1 DVD (or the Mandriva ODIN b2 DVD) to attempt repairs. Only the error displayed, NFAP. Boot RHEL3 CD1 (F5 Rescue, -/bin/sh_2.05b#) or WinXP CD [fixmbr], not sure which is best approach to correct errors, allow restoration of the GRUB/MBR. Understand #17=Can't mount selected partition. Filesystem not recognized by GRUB.
3x boot of Suse, XP, Ultimate. All was working OK, had installed some FW Antivirus utilities and scanning entire HD, and was finishing my reading of Scott's Easiest Linux Guide w/ Foxit Reader 2.0 b.
Hit icon for Sym/Nor Partition Magic 8.05 accidentally, Init error 117 .....{*!* Not remarkable here other than as possible cause of this problem!}
Later on as a new program install reqd reboot I allowed, =Error 17!
I think it was Power4gear in ULTIMATE {a standard CPU speed control utility common on this LT, that never caused problems before}.
Reviewed all Grub error #s (15, 16, 18, 25). Posts 381223, 427196, 461702, 477507 seemed most similar, but I can not `fdisk-l' as no keybd.
No load of Suse DVD (aka 390144) to boot kernel in command shell.
No FD on this LT.
When RHEL3 CD1 booted it depicted partitions as I expected them to be. But RHEL3 wanted to reformat my 3GB swap as 1992MB, and showed btwn each partition `Found <1MB Free space' ?, part table mismatch??
RHEL3 wanted to Auto Partition the existing 25GB Free space in the extended part, not yet devoted to any OS, and continue install.
I left as is and rebooted, Selection F5 Rescue displayed `Unable to align partition properly. This means that another partitioning tool generated an incorrect partition table, because it did not have the correct BIOS geometry. It is safe to ignore, but may cause (fixable) boot errors'. {PM 8.05?} So I ignored it.
Next display -/bin/sh_2.05b# = point I rebooted, but don't understand how to proceed from here. Not sure if RHEL3 CD would correct problem resulting in Error 17.
Boot of xpPRO CD allows me access Recovery mode (R) I could fixmbr, but it had a warning, I think it basically tried to tell me Grub was there, not reading correctly.
259607 `Boot problem Grub Loading stage 2' link (tinyurl) to msg 00908 discusses FC2. marghorp RSVP seemed most useful, appears I should fixmbr & then a `Suse 10.1 Rescue of Grub' from DVD if I can figure out why unable to boot from it now.
Which avenue is best approach to clear Error 17? Allow me to repair MBR, correct Grub w/o reformatting HD on another computer & repeating all my installs?

hi,
Does any changes have been made to device.map or grub.conf?
Dont worry about the warning given by recovery console, u can use fixmbr but thats not the solution as it wont take to linux.
Boot from RHEL cds get into rescue mode and use fdisk -l command to inpect the partitioning style and plz list me the output.
regards,
Tom.
GAG 46 bl OK; Suse=17, Ultimate=NTLDR is missing, Same XP + Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to res
Graphical Boot Manager install, worked OK when BIOS Virus warning DISABLED, but still have Error 17. No luck w/ XP Recovery Console actions, fix.,chk..,boot
I located GAG 4.6, and installed to HD OK, tried each starting order possible, BUT always got as noted Subj. Attempts to boot each OS = Error received
Recovery Console fixmbr "Computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. Fixmbr may damage your partition tables. If you proceed, this could cause all the partitions to become inaccessible. FIXMBR=OK
Sure enough it deleted the GAG Boot Loader. Reboot=Same Errors, NTLDR etc
FIXBOOT=OK, but no change, CHKDSK /P indicates errors, so /R =OK. Nada!
bootcfg / scan=Error, Failed ...
I think I have exhausted XP boot CD possibilities
Resources I have: GAG 4.6 boot CD http:\\gag.sourceforge.net small DL
Complete set of 9 CDs RHEL3, but F5 Rescue System =-/bin/sh_2.05b#
which means I have no idea how to proceed. Search on -/bin/sh_2.05b# in da big G & Y, +LQ=Nada.
Sym/Nor PartitionMagic 8.05 CD (but, I think this is what caused the problem!)
Will the RHEL3 CD set work OK to rescue a SUSE install?? TY d8d
System is proceeding w/ RHEL 3 install. Get the following Warning During Automatic Partitioning "Following warnings occured During Automatic Partitioning.
Boot Partition /boot may not meet booting constraints for your architecture. Creation of a boot disk is highly encouraged."
TOM, TY for help, posts X'd, my DT SD. I can proceed w/ automatic partitioning, even w/ the above warning. It then shows partition info as my "when RHEL3 CD1 booted it..."
Q ** Do you want that info? **** or should I
Attempt Manual partition with Disk Druid???
Am sitting in public library w/ LT on chair next to me

Reason: See if system @ Public library is working OK before I try serious replies, Lan Security or proxy settings problem in Library system servers. Wish I had not lost 2 entire posts RHEL3 Auto partiti data
Partitions seen by RHEL3 Automatic part, similar enough `fdisk -l data reqd to TShoot
Ignored the warning listed in 17:25 message Warning During Automatic Partition "" ...""

Actually I have more ntfs at end of HD, but each logical drive has Free space < 1 nnnn nnnn before it. Cause?=PM 8.05 vs VISTA? PM changed CHS/LBA values, then error 117 in PM next use after reboot!
Truncated /dev/hda# to post what XP hda3, Vista hda5 & Suse partitions are before I lose all data again on this computer!
Still have kernel message when fdisk -l entered @ boot:
Could not find kernel image fdisk
Have not seen -/bin/sh_2.05b# again, not sure I got it now. TY !

Reason: Tom- TY 4 LINKS, seem to differ, but CAN I RESCUE w/ data as above? Will reread again, try link recommendations tomorrow AM (EDT in USA). Post problems in Computer here IE vs LQ, MS Explorer crashes!
hi,
if u have any login problems with LQ, plz check out the browser options for cookies.
i saw many getting problems after using partition magic, like this one. http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/arc...php/t-395.html
i am not sure but it might be problem causer.
Today a coincidence i got the same error 17 after trying a fresh install of fedora core 5 taking away fc4 but i was lucky as fixmbr worked.
To your problem, you have free spaces that troubles grub, can refer this http://www.compatdb.org/ubbthreads.p.../172992/page/1
hi,
for me the problem is wrongly generated number by anocanda in root(hd , )in grub.conf file.i rectified it now and works fine.Grub 17 error denotes to this.sometimes minute free space also leaves to this problem as by my reference in the previous post.
regards,
Tom.
Geometry translation problem CHS vs LBA conflict when VISTA used to format anything!
From recent reading of GNU Grub 0.97 manual I think there is a Geometry translation problem (CHS vs LBA) conflict between Windoz distros and use of PM8. Is only really seen / problem caused when Linux is attempted. I still have the HD pulled out and set aside, not figured out how to access it yet. Running XP & FC5 only on smaller HD
