Unhappy upgraded 7.4 to 7.10, now nvidia driver and dual monitor problems :(

Ok, so I just finally decided to make the upgrade, everything works great except that my dual monitors are messed up. I have an Nvidia GTS8600 and it was working fine with the driver downloaded from the Nvidia site.

Now that I have upgraded, on the first boot it asked me to install the restricted driver for it, so I did (and was happy that I was not going to have to reinstall the drivers for my card everytime the kernal updated). So after that it worked ok, but it was not showing that I had a second monitor hooked up, it was acting like a single monitor with a 2880x900 resolution.

So I thought that I should try and go back to the old driver I was using to fix this, I did and then the xserver would not find my screens. Since then I have tried going back and fourth between the two drivers and my backed up xorg.conf files, and everything has only gotten worse. Now I can only boot in safe mode and I cant get either screen to come up in the x server.

A similar thing happened to my laptop (xubuntu 7.10).

I don't have a dual screen setup, so my display filled only half of the screen. The left-hand side. I went into the BIOS and switched the option from LCD/CRT to LCD ONLY. That at least got it to recognize the correct dimensions for my monitor and solved the problem.

Good luck.
