Today I just installed Ubuntu on my second hd with windows xp on the first. When I install it everything is fine. Then I get to the menu after I reboot, and select to start either ubuntu or win xp and it gives me a error message. Then I reboot again and choose to boot off the first drive (with the disk still in) And everything works fine and I am able to run ubuntu and win xp, only if i have the disk in while starting up. Does anyone know a fix for this?
I didn't get that clear enough yet. So you have two harddisks - XP on the first harddisk (primary) and Ubuntu on the second (secondary). Where did you install GRUB to - primary or secondary harddisk, MBR of the disk or to the beginning of the partition? And what do you mean by "with the disc still in", that you had the Ubuntu install disc in cd drive and booted off that, getting XP and Ubuntu work (or if you didn't boot off that, then it doesn't do a thing)?
Could you be a bit more clear, just in case, so we don't get anything wrong. What error message did GRUB give you?
To me it sounds like it's a problem because Ubuntu is on 2nd drive and if you installed GRUB there, it's not working as well as it would on the first drive. Something like that.
Ok, I installed Ubuntu, then all seemed ok. Whenever I go to start my system, I get to the grub menu. But when I select to start Ubuntu I get the message, "Error 15: file not found." So I try to start up Win xp and get the message, "Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format." So I put the Ubuntu 7 cd back into my drive. Then boot off the Ubuntu cd. Then I go to "boot from first hard disk" from the menu. Then I am able to get to the grub menu. From there I am able to get to win xp and ubuntu and everything works as it should. I am fairly new to linux so I am not sure what to do.
