Ubuntu 7.04 issues

Having ran Ubuntu 6.10 successfully without any issues, I was looking forward to Ubuntu 7.04. As soon as it came out I downloaded and install it (clean install).

Everything works OK except from:

- I can't change the wallpaper. Well, I can, but as soon as I reboot it reverts back to the original. I've tried images saved on my Ubuntu partition and also those from Firefox (i.e. "Set as Wallpaper").

- Wireless - worked fine on Ubuntu 6.10. Worked fine the first time I booted into Ubuntu 7.04. Won't work anymore.

Any suggestions to either?

I don't know if I will be able to help you with either of these, but if you give us some more information you might get more replies. What have you tried to get the wireless working? Does it detect your wireless card? Does it detect your wifi router, and just not connect to it? Does it detect your card and say it is connected to the wireless, but you still can't access the internet? Just give us a little info if you wouldn't mind!

It say's it is using restricted drivers (which are in use and working OK) - I did not have to use any restricted drivers on 6.10 though.

The network is detected and the password accepted but the network light on my laptop just keeps flashing and I cannot connect to any websites, IRC or P2P or anything in Linux. To make sure the network isn't the thing causing the trouble, I rebooted into windows XP and everything works fine.

Currently I havnt upgraded my laptop to 7.04 yet, so I don't know how the wireless works on ubuntu 7.04 for sure.

Maybe someone else has some ideas?

Okay, so I booted into Ubuntu today to see if I could have a go at fixing what was wrong with the wireless. Wireless however worked straight away. GREAT!

Wallpaper still will not stick and I have now lost my window controls (maximise, minimise, close). I am still using the default theme. Tried changing themes, window decorations etc but I still cannot get my controls back!

Weird, Ubuntu 6.10 was great!

You may try this. Run "gconf-editor" and go to apps/ metacity/ general. The "button_layout" option should say "menu:minimize, maximize, close" It could be possible that the button_layout does NOT have any settings. Just a thought...

I'll try it, but why would it work for a day and then suddenly stop working?

Still not working - wireless has stopped again too.

I might go back to 6.10 until things get sorted!

It sounds like you are having more problems than just the wireless! If it was me, I would probably just try re-installing and see if the same problems were still there. Maybe something got messed up when it was installing?

Aye, I will try reinstalling completely later. Do you think I should try the alternate install CD since I used the Live CD first time around?

I have had better luck with the alternate cd when installing 7.04. Have you ever tried Kubuntu? I was having problems with getting wireless to work on one of my friends laptops, and I just installed ubuntu then did
Code:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
When that was done, I rebooted and started up KDE and the wireless worked great! Not sure why, but I like kde better any way, so why not use it!

I prefer Gnome..

Is there any reason why wireless would be worse on 7.04 than on 6.10 though?

I'll give the alternate CD a shot and see what happens!

Ubuntu 7.04 might be using an updated driver, and it might not be working with your wireless card. I would do a re-install and see if that helps. If not, then see if there is something else that could be wrong.

Thats kinda wierd...

I've got some oddball hardware(TV cards), adn they always configure exactly the same way in both DE's. Not to mention, if you install KDE beside Gnome, and it works in KDE, logic says, it should work in Gnome(at least thats been my experience)...

Yeah, they install and run the same under both, but gnomes network manager and kde's network manager just both work a little different is what I think the problem is. I have found the same thing happens with sound sometimes. But, once you get it working with one or the other, it then works on both. (At least usually)
