Ubuntu - resolution

Hi all,

This is my first time with Ubuntu and Debian distribution, apologise if this is commonly asked question but I have a problem with my X resolution. Whenever I bootup with my monitor switched off, my X will be set at 640x480 .. and there is no way I can bring it up to normal resolution that I have. No problem when the monitor is switched on during boot up.. I've Belkin OMNI Cube attached if that matter. I have no problem with FC3 and SUSE 9.x .. so I guess there should be something in the configuration file that I need to set. /etc/X11/xorg.conf doesn't have anything fancy ..

Hi,

If your monitor is 'plug & play', I think that Xorg will 'talk' to your monitor and set resolution accordingly, so if the monitor is off during X startup, standard VGA settings will be used instead.

Have you tried 'Ctrl'-'Alt'-+ (plus key) or 'Ctrl'-'Alt'-- (minus key) to change resolution?

Hi,

I had a similar problem : my monitor don't shut off but I wasn't able to choose my favorite resolution.
Try this : run a terminal an type sudo -s, dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, left all choice by default except the ones where xserver ask for choosing the resolutions you want X uses. Select the resolution you want (with the spacebar) and then press enter. exit the configuration tool and reboot. You should now be able to choose the resolution you want.
