Ubuntu 8.04 amd 64 Package Manager doesn,t work on newly installed system. It will not download
from the internet or from installation cd.

I'm guessing the repositories are overloaded from everybody downloading new software, etc.

Try this...

System/Admin/Software Sources

In the pull down bar beside "Download From" Select "Other"
When the new window pops up, make sure your country is selected, then on the right click, "Select best server" It will then go through and begin pinging all the servers, and set you up on the one that responds the fastest.

Very strange.. I have no suggestion at this point. Were you connected to the internet during install? If not, go to System/Admin/System Sources, and make sure all the tabs on the "Ubuntu Software" tab, is checked.

Doesn't make much sense.

The servers are loaded. If you wait the install will start -- just takes a while.

Yes, it took forever to download some packages on the Ubuntu repos, but once I got through, I was downloading at a blazing 20KB/sec!!!
