Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop Shortcuts

Hi,
Very simply question. I simply cannot find anyway to create a simple desktop shortcut. I am Using Linux Ubuntu 11.04 with the Unity Interface. I love the panel on the side, but I would also like simple desktop shortcuts also. I can't do it. I tried dragging them on and nothing, I tried right clicking to see if there was an option and nothing. Where can I do this?

Using Gnome3? If so, there is no more support for icons...that frustrates me too...
(unless I'm mistaken, of course, I use the fallback, by the way)

Hi there,

Well there is an option to "Add to Desktop" when you right click on any application to create shortcut on desktop for that application. Well this will not going to work for folders though. If you want to to create a shortcut to a folder then just drag and drop to desktop and select "icon" option when asked.

Drag and drop should work as it is working for me. Give a try with the option (for applications) I mentioned above and with drag and drop thing and see if it works.

You need to right-click on desktop and there choose "Create Launcher..." option. That opens little box where you but your desired shortcut (example terminal in ubuntu 11.04) Application Name: Terminal, Command: gnome-terminal. That creates Terminal shortcut icon to your desktop.

Hope this helps.

Hi, i found if you go to system settings, login screen and select ubuntu classic, log out and back in you can go through the classic application menu. From there you are able to right click the application and select create launcher on desktop. Now just change the login settings back to ubuntu and you good to go.

If you want to add application launcher, you can go to usr/share/application and copy the app you want to desktop.
