Trouble updating kernel.

Hey guys,

I went to Synaptic and checked the "linux-kernel-686" package for installation.. It downloaded, did its thing and went to a terminal window in the program..

It said "failed!" so I said screw it, and did it from the terminal.. Heres what I get:

Code:
root@ubuntu:/home/chris # dpkg --configure -a
Setting up linux-image-2.6.8.1-5-686 (2.6.8.1-16.12) ...
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1-5-686 points to /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8.1-5-686 -- doing nothing at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.8.1-5-686.postinst line 514.
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-5-686 points to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-5-686 -- doing nothing at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.8.1-5-686.postinst line 514.
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub .
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst .
Searching for splash image... none found, skipping...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-5-686
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-3-386
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-test
It doesnt go passed "Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-test". I let it run for 8 hours the other night when I went to sleep, only to twake up and see that it was still frozen at the same spot.

Help! Thanks.

-Chris

Also, it won't let me back into Synaptic without running "dpkg --configure -a", which is the command that fu*ks everything up for me in the first place

Bleh.
