Question updating kernel -- help!

A newbie has a question:

I tried updating the kernel by downloading the rpm for 2.4.22-1.2140, and did

rpm -Uvh on that file (unfortunately I did not use -ivh).

Is that all that's necessary to update the kernel? From uname -a, it seems I'm still running the old kernel.

Also, the network card has ceased to work since; when I try to activate it, I get the error:

modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptl/modules.dep (No such file or directory)
interface 'etho0' not found
3c59x device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization

2.4.22-1.2115 is the old kernel version.

...Help?

I didn't know you could upgrade the kernel via rpm. Which distro?

I would say that the -Uvh option was the correct one, since that that would upgrade while deleting older, unecessary files.

I still say you have to upgrade the kernel the traditional way with make menuconfig. Maybe you can explain the rpm method to me.

I'm running Fedora and I downloaded the kernel rpm from here:

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...pdates/1/i386/

... what's the correct way to do it? Any guide that I can refer to?

Thanks!

Try this out:
---------------------------------
yum -y update
---------------------------------

Walk away and watch lots of TV. Come back and check during commercials to see if it's done.

Reboot your computer when it is finished.
