Unhappy Scanner not seen on 10.10

I've been using a Nikon Coolscan 4000ED on Ubuntu for a couple of years via Vuescan with no problems at all.

The other day I upgraded to 10.10 and Vuescan can no longer see the scanner. So I tried X-Sane and Simplescan and they both say there is no scanner even though it's connected and switched on. So for some reason, Ubuntu 10.10 cannot see the scanner or perhaps the IEEE connection.

Any ideas?
Thanks

( If the answer depends on doing something in the terminal, please explain how and what in words of one syllable ... )

This may or may not be useful, but some distributions want a scanner user to be a member of (additional) groups lp, plugdev, and scanner (plugdev if it's a USB connection).

Hope this helps some.

[EDIT]
Open a terminal window and enter
Code:
prompt: groups
to see what groups you are a member of.

Thanks for that - I've checked on the groups and I'm a member of lp, there's no group called scanner, and it's an IEEE connection, so that should let out plugdev.

The odd thing is it's been working fine on all versions of Ubuntu for the last couple of years, but as soon as I upgraded to 10.10, nothing, kaput!
