In a (in retrospect) probably silly move I installed kubuntu-desktop and all related apps in Ubuntu so that I could run both Gnome and KDE (along with XFCE4, which I installed before kubuntu and worked just fine) in the same environment.
However, since I rebooted with the new KDE environment installed things started to mess up. I configured Ubuntu to enable logging in as root at the login screen (root login @ terminal still works) but now since Kubuntu has taken over my login screen I cannot do this anymore.
Also in Gnome the menu Adminisration > Login Screen Setup doesn't work anymore. Running this in a terminal window it says that it cannot find a certain configuration file. I wanted to use this to revert to my trusty old Gnome greeter theme but alas this doesn't work anymore now.
The system preferences menu in KDE allows you to go to Administrator mode but when I type in my password it just goes back to the way it was and I still can't change a ****.
Is there any way to reverse the changed Kubuntu made to my Ubuntu? I'm running ver 5.10.

why do you need to run linux as root in gui mode?
I wanted to log in as root in order to access the Login Screen options in KDE, since when I use Administrator mode in the KDE System preferences menu, nothing happens.
How do I revert to GDM? Just "sudo apt-get install GDM"? And does this remove KDM then?
sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm or gdm should do the trick. It will then ask with DM you wish to use.
I thought they fixed a lot of those Control Center issues with asking for the root password rather than using sudo. Although you could add another button to your menu or panel executing kdesudo -c kcontrol, or it may just be kdesudo kcontrol. I do not remember of the top of my head. kdesudo --help will be able to tell you better than I.
I'm confused about logging in as root. I did the reverse. I installed Ubuntu and then all the KDE packages plus "k3b", "g++" and "qt3" stuff, then updated everything.
When I first logged in to KDE, I put a "terminal" icon and a "root terminal" icon on the task bar,
Doesn't that answer the problem?
(it looks like I should update my profile)

Right, I've tried numerous things today, all of which wouldn't work. So I reinstalled Ubuntu tonight and stayed with my trusty ole Gnome and XCFE4. I wasn't too keen on KDE anyway.
Thanks again to everyone who submitted a post.

If you are talking about the Control Center, I had the issue at one time so to fix it I just went into the kmenu editor and copied the Control Center link and pasted a second one. Named it Control Center Super User and then used the setting to define a user and added root to that option. Now when I press the Control Center Super User it ask for root's password. Enter password and it opens. Note any changes to non administrated mode options is actually applied to root's kde enviroment settings. So if you want to change background use the regular Control Center choice or you will be changing root's background image.
