problems with postfix and mutt

So I have finally got postfix set up. After getting a bunch of RCPT TO couldn't resolve errors I finally figured out I forgot to forward the port lol. Now I want to setup mutt to work with postfix. Right now I'm logged in as tim and I type mutt and it says /var/mail/tim is not a mailbox. How would I go about configuring mutt and postfix to work nicely? And how do I assign email addresses to the various user accounts? And how do I determine where postfix puts all the incoming email? Sorry, I'm a n00b with setting up email.

Alright I found out the mail goes to /var/mail/username and that /etc/aliases contains what mail goes to who. But when I load mutt it says /var/mail/username is not a mailbox, yet if I vi the file, it has the e-mail in it, what should I do?
