problems installing ubuntu-6.06

Hi, i'm very new to linux, and downloaded the ubuntu 6.06 version of ubuntu. I downloaded the live desktop cd as well as the alternate installer cd- and burned their iso discs as well. I first tried the desktop version so i could see what ubuntu and linux is all about. I immediately fell in love with it. But here is where things went sour. I decided to install it, and clicked the Install icon- the installer SLOWLY started up (as stated on the Ubuntu website). I then got through step one, and on to step two....but once i got to step two the installer seemed to freeze and wouldnt let me pick my timezone or anything, so i let it sit, but still nothing. I then rebooted, this time with the alternate install cd - it ran and i setup DHCP and the network name, the username, password, and all that stuff. Everything seemed to be going well, then during one of the steps the screen just turned black with two little white rectangles in the center.....this sat there for a while, and nothing happened, so i just restarted the computer, then after restarting it, i get "error starting operating system" or something of that nature. So then I re-ran the installation cd. When i ran through again, the same thing happened, so i let the computer sit at that black screen (with the little squares on it.) Then after what seemed like an eternity, the disc tray popped open(screen still the same) so i let it sit, took the disc out, and shut the drive door. and still nothing happened. Then I held the powerbutton in and restarted the computer- This time INSTEAD of saying "error starting operating system" , I get something that says :
---------------------------------------------------------

GNU GRUB version 0.97 (634k lower / 257984k upper memory)

[Minimal BASH_Like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> _

---------------------------------------------------------

So my questions are-

1. Is that what is supposed to happen? I figure it's not. I would figure it's supposed to boot right into the graphical user interface.

2. If that is normal, what do i do next?

3. why do you think the other cd froze when picking time zones? (had the picture of the map in the installer screen.)

4. Has anyone else encountered this? and if so, or if not..... Can someone help me get this to work correctly?

If anyone has a guess or knows all together, please help, I would love to get this running.

PS- was i supposed to format the hdd before i ran the install? or does it not matter because the disk formats it on its own...... doesnt it??

Hi,
Though I am running Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop I have not come across this problem. But I wonder how you tried to install with Ubuntu alternate CD. That is meant for upgrading from Ubuntu 5.10.

With regard to the time zone it doesn't pick up automatically. You zoom to one of those time zone points by clicking on them and select your time zone point. It should work OK. But try with Ubuntu desktop but not with alternate CD.

You do your installation right from the beginning. Though I am not an expert on Linux I am an user of Ubuntu.

No. It should boot you right into linux kernel, then to the GUI, automatically

>2. If that is normal, what do i do next?

It is not normal. Please post how much RAM do you have, and ay what speed did you burn CDs

>3. why do you think the other cd froze when picking time zones? (had the picture of the map in the installer screen.)

May be you have a little amount of RAM? Or more likely, its CD problem

>4. Has anyone else encountered this? and if so, or if not..... Can someone help me get this to work correctly?

I'll do my best . Anyway, I'm Fedora user

>If anyone has a guess or knows all together, please help, I would love to get this running.

Try tu burn CD's at lower speed. And what about your hardware?

>PS- was i supposed to format the hdd before i ran the install? or does it not matter because the disk formats it on its own...... doesnt it??

I also meant amount of HDD space, etc. At what step "alternate" install CD got freeze ?

thankyou both for your responses- I burned the disks at the lowest setting I could. I am guessing its my hardware however. I dont think i have enough ram- that must have to do with it. Plus it's an emachine lol. Im currently trying to use Xubuntu to see if that works better. It's meant for slower pc's isnt it? Also, i didnt know the alternate was only for upgrading, so that must be why that got all screwy. I'll post after the install finishes for Xubuntu- then maybe i'll upgrade RAM tmrw. Thanks again guys- I plan to buy a new PC soon anyway, so Ubuntu will def. be my os of choice- but i heard the creator is making a new version, with a different name???

thanks again- i'll post soon!!

If you have 128 Mb RAM - then that's the problem . May be you can install Xubuntu, cause, its desktop XFCE istead of GNOME, and more light. No OS's under new name, may be you heard about Mepis? That's another distro based on ubuntu. Good luck anyway!

Open up Synaptic package manager, and search for MythTV, I think it should work. Also, enable repos commercial and non-free, to install multimedia codecs.

No, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu all use the same base packages, just different GUIs

hey, thanks again for the responses, i got Ubuntu 6.06 up and running now! I didn't think the disk would be a dud, but i guess it had some problems the first time around. I'm going to try to do the myth install a little later using the info ya'll just gave me. But i have a new question:

When i installed, Ubuntu told me there were some updates (106 of the to be exact) for me to download-- so i let the updater install them- around the end of the updating i get this message on the screen saying that there were a few packages that didnt install due to errors on the system- i can't remember what it said- and im not sure how to retry downloading or installing what ever the updates were. Anyone know if there is a way to reinstall updates? (its from the little orange icon that apears in the top left toolbar on the screen. A little bubble appeared telling me there were updates) Is there anyway to get back to that update screen to try the reinstall or something?

It means that errors are resolved . Usually it can be download errors, it seems like it downloaded those files later. Try
Code:
http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html
to get codecs, drivers, and other software just for a few clicks. It's very useful.
