problem with gnome's shut down button (red button)

Hey guys! i am experiencing delay problems with the shut down button in gmone (the red button on the bottom right corner). When i click it needs about 30secs (y that much) to show the options (shutdown,restart,log out etc). During that period i can move the mouse but i cannot click anywhere. It works like lock down the pc for 30 secs and then show the options to the user.
Any clue what should i check?

You have to re-enable gnome-power-manager in System->Preferences->Session

Try it before: run "gnome-power-manager &" in a terminal then click the button: if it is all right it will work.

I'd the same problem in Ubuntu 8.04 with Gnome 2.22.3
