Problem loging into Ubuntu 9.04

Have been on windows for quite a while. Last year - decided to switch to Linux. After many experiments settled finally for ubuntu. 8.04 was my first. upgraded to 8.10 and then to 9.04 when it was released. Have little clue on unix or linux or the command line.
On 9.04 got to the stage of managing to sort out sound problems and setting up a Logitech cam with skype. Was happy indeed that I had accomplished a lot and shutdown 2 days ago. Ever since I am unable to boot into/ login into ubuntu 9.04. Each time on the login screen my ID and password are being rejected.
The last time I was strugling with sound, remember generating psswd randomly to check if user permission for pulse audio----- Do not know if this has anything to do with my problem.
Could anyone suggest what I ought to do to be able to log into Ubuntu 9.04 please?? Or is the only choice to REINSTALL 9.04?

I am the ONLY user of my single computer. In the process of installing, I entered a ID and a password is all.

Be good to have some Help

Smile Problem loging into Ubuntu 9.04

Thanks loads Ronlau9. Have a print out of your solution and will post results in a while after trying out your method. I did go to the shell but was not sure what to type. Tried startx and got the opening screen with 'Problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet"' and got no further since mouse was hungup and nothing else worked. Also didn't know how to restart to go to windows so just turned power off.
AND thanks XavierP for moving my post to Ubuntu.

Talking Problem loging into Ubuntu 9.04

Thanks to you Ronlau9. Everything went off fine and I am back on 9.04 & in business. All my data is safe and sound.
The Q now is - how did I land in this situation? In user settings while trying to check if pulse, pulse-access and pulse rt were in the group, I had random generated a password to 'unlock'. I then shutdown. Is this the reason for the ID & Psswd not correct Error coming up on login??

nah I reckon bad memory.

Still all this shows that Linux isn't secure either. Don't know the password too easy to reset.
