all seems well in ubuntu printer setup and drivers. cups, hpijs hplip etc system finds printer and sets it up and from system/administration/printing the printer shows up with the right description Hp deskjet d2600 on local host. when I try to print I get message "started job" and another message "finished job" but nothing prints. The log Var/log/cups/error_log shows only one thing that I think is wrong "cupsd authorize:no authentication data provided". my user name john and one other Andy (I installed) show up in lp group. I could attach the whole error_log file if it would help. I am new to Linux but love it. I used Windows NT for years. I am the administrator on the box. Don't know what to try next.
Would really appreciate some help or direction.
Tnx John
Hi Peacedog The answer is yes I have tried several times to use localhost:631. I just used it to reset to default the cupsd.conf and then tried to print and got the same result. The printer is on usb. I get the message "job started" and then "job finished" with no printing. If I run hplip setup the last thing is a request to print a test page which it will do. It will not print the test page from system/administration/printers--select the printer and then select "properties" and then select "print test page" I get the same response. So I know that the printer works and that the system can find it. Is this some kind of authentication problem due to the message in the error_log that no authentication data is provided?? Would it help if I attached some of the error_log??
Appreciate you response

when I went to localhost:631 and looked at jobs. All of the recent attempts to print showed as Foomatic-rip failed. Isn't that due to not having the right driver (hpijs) installed?
really appreciate some help!! Maybe I should just reinstall the whole thing(ubuntu 10.04)??
I checked the version by using synaptic it is 3.10.2 as is hpijs both ubuntu 2.2. Wwhen I ran dpkg -l hplip I got a lot of information including the version 3.10.2 the last line says reinst-required
how do i try the cups web interface? I set the "allow printing from the internet" in administration.
You shouldn't need to "allow internet printing" if the printer is local, i.e. plugged into the pc via usb or parallel port. Is this a networked printer?
Hi Peacedog appreciate your help! The printer is on usb alone with a new cable connected directly to the computer i:e no hub. I have my AT&T dsl modem hooked up via ethernet. Otherwise there is no network. All the printer info shows that it is on local host I don't have any trouble with localhost:631 I changed the loglevel back to warn and edited the cupsd.conf file several times. Allowing internet printing didn't make any difference anyway, so I changed it back. What else should I do? Obvious a newbie here but determined. Everything else works very well I am not using Gnome or KDE. Internet is fast using google and gmail. Open Office is very good Play lots of games and have set up the Microchip development enviroment. Feel very stupid that I can't get the printer to work. Thank you

The next step I would take is upgrading hplip. The series doesn't appear to be supported very well yet, i.e. no parallel, no network, no scan, fax, etc.
Hi Peacedog Took your recommendation and went to hplip open source down loaded and installed hplip ver.. 3.11.1 I had a little trouble in that there was two versions of the printer which showed up from print command. However the first one was I guess found before I installed the ver 3.11.1 which uses hpcups and not hpijs so when I ran hp_check -r both of them showed and the first was of course using hpijs and associated filter. Using the one that was using the hpcups driver worked just fine, and I now have a printer that works. I can't tell how much I appreciate your help and input and should I say patience! thanks again!
