pppoe and packet sniffing issues

hi,
I am using pcap.h to capture packet.
when I use eth0 as device for sniffing on ubuntu it gives error as IPv4 address is not assigned.
and when I use ppp0 ( my working interface to use internet ie. I am able to use Internet using ppp0 ) It gives error not a ethernet device.
Any idea that how can we sniff packets using pppoe in ubuntu ?
