No sound from any applications

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu, just installed Ubuntu studio yesterday. After a fresh install, sound worked fine in everything (ardour, hydrogen, jack, didn't try xmms however..) Last night I was fooling around with some of the apps, and came across Creox c, for real-time guitar effects. I plugged my guitar in and messed around for a while, then turned off the program. After that, sound didn't work in any applications. The microphone however kept playing its input through the speaker. I restarted- nothing. Still just the microphone hum. I know the sound card still works, because Windows works fine with it on my dual-boot system. I booted into a few different kernels to no avail. After that, I just figured it would save me time to format and reinstall Ubuntu Studio. So I did, and somehow, sound still didn't work. Still just the microphone. I've got a Sound Blaster Live! card and apparently some sort of Intel ICH5 AC97 card too. I tried restore with alsactl. I tried messing with alsamixer. I don't have alsaconf on my computer and for some reason apt-get can't get it.. (not sure if that would help..) I don't know what the problem could be if an hd format didn't fix it. Any ideas? Thanks

Edit: One other thing I noticed - When sound was working, alsa_pcm in qjackctl had 2 outputs. When sound stopped working, alsa_pcm shows 6 outputs. Odd.

Well looks like that was the problem.. used asoundconf set-default-card and that fixed it. Guess I jumped the gun with this post, just got a little worried when the HD format didn't fix it! Not sure why it acted differently this time when I installed, but now everything's alright. Thanks for your help.

I tried the same command, but still no luck in my case.

I have Kubuntu Feisty, with an SB Live (CA0106), plus an onboard card.

Originally, it found both of these, but seemed to be trying to use the onboard one - even though it is disabled in the Bios.

I followed the instructions on the ALSA site to reinstall ALSA. Now it only reports the correct card - everything seems to be pointing at that card, which is the default - but no sound.

The speakers are plugged in to the correct card and switched on. The soundcard works fine in XP on the same box (different disk - not dual boot).

The worst part is that it did work at first. Clearly I did something to mess it up and now I can't undo whatever that was. I don't even remember what I might have done. I have installed Cedega and Wine, but it has worked since both of those were installed.

Any ideas please?
