Hi. I am running kubuntu 7.10. and use Amarok to play radio streams, however I can't get "1.FM-Otto's opera house" and other "soundcast" streams to play. What do I have to install to get them. I got them in 7.04, but don't know how I did it.
I am able to get WCPE & WCLV ok.
That is a windows active server page link. It doesn't contain the stream info you need for amarok, but you can open it in a browser and then use that info to get the correct link.
I opened that link in konqueror. It used xine to play the stream. Then I saved the playlist, and cut and pasted the info I needed. Here is the link I added to "Radio Streams":
mmsh://opera.1.fm/1fmopera128k
I'm listening to it now so it should work for you as well in amarok.
Sometimes a link won't work in a browser but you can get the correct link from the source code for the web page.
Thanks but I am at a total loss!! I have no idea of how to implement your suggestions. I know I did not do them in a previous Kubuntu 7.10 installation. I just download a bunch of likely stuff until it worked. I am going back to this older version for now as I have to get some work done.
What I don't understand is Amarok is the KDE default player. It lists all these Radio Streams & soundcasts on a new kubuntu installation but does not give the "plug in"s or what ever you call them needed to play them. I go to the KPackage manager and look at Amarok. I have all the stuff listed as being needed and suggested installed. STILL IT DOES NOT PLAY!! (I can play some fm radio stations and my CD ok)
Please don't get me wrong, I appreciate the trouble and effort you have gone to help an old non-computer-wise me.
The link you provided isn't a type that amarok can use. Another thing, according to the website, soundcasts are not yet supported.
The link is for an active server page, which might return anything.
"echo 'http://www.1.fm/TuneIn/WM/energyopera128k/Listen.aspx".
Firefox was able to handle this and got a list back from the Windows server.
I launched xine by clicking on the link in the browser. Then I saved the playlist. Loading the play list in an editor I located a proper link to use and used that.
From original link, this is what was returned. More aspx links:
I cut out one of the urls in this list. I picked the one that I have highlighted.
Then I went back to amarok, selected "Radio Streams" --> "Add New Radio Stream", and then pasted "mrl = msh://opera.1.fm/1fmopera128k" for the url entry. After that, I can simply click on the Radio stream entry in amarok to stop playing.
You probably don't have a codec problem. They use a funky Windows Media Player server with a non-standard protocol. Firefox understood that protocol and retrieved a usable link that xine understood. I've had to do this on occasion with podcasts. Most of the links work fine, but on others, I needed to hunt for the correct xml or rss link to use instead.
Thanks.
I have gone back to the computer where Amarok works.
I do not know what I downloaded to be able to play these "streams", but I don't think I did any of the things you suggest as I only used "Adept" for my down loads.
There are two engines that Amarok can use. If you can play these streams in xine, then use the Xine engine. If xine can't play them, you may need some plugins for Xine, rather than for amarok.
Thanks.
I went to kpackage and on the computer where Otto worked, looked at the "xine" packages that were installed. (as you suggested, I think).
xine-ui
amarok-xine
kaffeine-xine
libxinerama-dev
libxine1
libxine1-ffmpeg
libxinerama1
x11proto-xinerama-dev
The computer that didn't like Otto was missing the xine-ui. After installing that, Otto was happy and so was I.
You have the amarok-xine package installed. Consider installing the xine-browser-plugin. That will allow you to click on a link on a webpage, and do what I did in cases were the server does funny things that amarok doesn't understand.
You may need to use a different repo to get a version that handles propriety formats.
