(K)ubuntu ALSA with ONE sound card.

SOLVED! ARTS in KDE/Kubuntu hates my Card, whereas GNOME and ALSA behave well with regular Ubuntu. Had to re-install dumping Kubuntu infavor of Ubuntu from ISO CD.

Ok, I disabled the NVidia onboard sound in BIOS.

Now, my M-Audio Audiophile Delta 2496 is the primary and only card detected by ALSA.

foreman@ubuntuJFF:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

0 [M2496 ]: ICE1712 - M Audio Audiophile 24/96
M Audio Audiophile 24/96 at 0xd000, irq 18

Still, no playback!

XMMS won't load, Audacity says cannot initialize the sound server. Even when I go into KInfoCenter everything works, except the "sound" section and it will close the program if I go to it.

Other programs may load but won't play sound or start the sound server.

So what is the issue here? Why is ALSA correctly detecting my card yet anyhting that tries to use it cannot or won't start at all???

Recompiling ALSA.

The tutorial below and instructions worked like a charm, and I did a few other suggestions on there.

*** http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=ice1712
*** I just compiled alsa, using the ubuntu source for ALSA provided from kynaptic/synaptic.
*** It placed the source.bz2 file in /usr/src/ (automatically done by kynaptic)

Make a directory to store the alsa source code in.
cd /usr/src
mkdir alsa
cd /usr/src/alsa

Now unzip and install the alsa-driver package

bunzip2 alsa-driver-xxx
tar -xf alsa-driver-xxx
cd alsa-driver-xxx
./configure --with-cards=ice1712 --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install

Then it compiles the source for the same version of ALSA that comes with ubuntu/kubuntu currently.

Well since my onboard sound is off in bios and this compiled with the sequencer against my ICE 1712 chipset, I'm hoping that it will work.

I dont know right now because I left for class right after I compiled and rebooted.

I need my Jack and Jack Rack and Rosegarden and stuff No music makes this engineer very bored and sad

John

Ubuntu not Kubuntu

Ubuntu with GNOME and ALSA detects and plays my audio card. (Default ISO install)

(K)ubuntu with KDE's Arts, does not behave well with ALSA. (Default ISO install)

1.)Also Kubuntu lacks Ubuntu's (automated bug-report tool.)

2.)Kubuntu Also lacks "Ubuntu's device database tool"
