Java on Firefox hates me

Hi people... I need help... Have spent the last 3 hours on this and I'm getting really irritated...

Trying to install Java... This is what I have done so far....

Followed all instructions from this site...
http://java.com/en/download/help/500...selfextracting

I downloaded the self-extracting flie, unpacked it in /usr/java then made the symbloic link in /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins

When I do a ls in the plugin directory I get this...
libjavaplugin_oji.so ns

which I am assuming is right...

I have made sure that java is enabled in Firefox (edit->preferences->Web Features)

Restarted Firefox but I still get the prompt to install java!!!!!

I am so over this.... I need help... please

I am using Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog and Firefox 1.0.7

when I go to aboutlugins in firefox I only see the plugins for shockwave..

Hope thats enough info... thanks guys and girls...

Hi,
Since you're using Ubuntu, why not trying adding this source in your sources.list :

deb ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/java-linux/debian/ sarge non-free

You'll get java after doing an apt-get update : it's called j2re1.4

At least you can try...

cheers

okay I did that and found the java file I need.
Although when I try get it I get a message about this dependency

j2re1.4:
Depends: libc6 (>=2.3.2.ds1-21) but 2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu14 is to be installed

But it's not listed in any of the repositories I have listed and I honestly wouldnt know where to start looking for the respository I need... grr... some things juts like to be difficult eh!

I have j2re installed, and I have used it many times with mozilla and mozilla-firefox. I have rarely encountered any problems. Couple of thing you might want to check:

Are java binaries in your path? Try "env|grep PATH" to see if you find something similar to "/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_05/bin", in your case probably /usr/java/bin. If not, add the path to your .bashrc

Have you linked to the correct plugin? There are several subdirectories in plugins directory... on mine ns4 ns610 and ns610-gcc32. Also check that you have linked to the correct "mozilla" directory? It should probably be /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins

Make sure you link with absolute paths, just to make sure. For example:

ln -s /usr/local/bin/j2re1.4.2_05/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
