Is there any other file(not interface) that stores the network configuration content?

For Ubuntu 10.04, I can configure the network by "Network Connections". This configuration is done by doing the following operation sequences(System->Preferences->Network Connections->wired->auto eth0). Then I can connect to and browse the internet. If I type the command "ifconfig", I can see the ip I configured for eth0. Part of the content is as blow:
Quote:
ifconfig
eth0
inet addr:192.168.28.31 Bcast:192.168.28.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
But in the "interfaces" file, there is no eth0 content. The whole content is simply as below:

Quote:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
I think there should be other files that keep the eth0 configuration content. What are they?

It all goes in the /etc/network/interfaces file.

Here is a short tutorial on how to do it...

I checked again, and the interfaces file is really as clean as what I posted. Maybe it's something related to vmware in which the ubuntu runs.

Now that I re-read your first post, what I think you are asking is 'Where are the network settings stored that I enter into Network Manager?'

To be honest, I have no idea. You can see them through the gui tools, but where the files are, are a mystery to me. Network Manager is a tool Ubuntu includes. To make it work, the interfaces file ( used on many other distros ) has little in it.

My first post assumed you wanted some level of control over the configuration. To get that, the link I posted shows you how to get rid of Network manager, and have Ubuntu act as most other distros for interface configuration. Then you can put what you want in the interfaces file, and things will work.

I'm not suggesting you should get rid of Network Manager. That is your choice.

I did some pocking around, and found the files stored by Network Manager. On my Ubuntu system they are located in files stored at: /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/. Here I found the files you create with NM. They have the names of the connections I created through the gui tool.

I don't think you should try to change these files directly, some of the data is strings of numbers, for example ssid.
