network interface configuration


I installed DSLinux on my pendrive and I tried to browse websites, but I found out that my installation has no any network interfaces that would be responsible for Internet connection. When I type "ifconfig" I'm getting only one interface "lo" which is obviously 127.0.0.1 loopback interface. I have no any eth0 interface or any other and unfortunatelly I have no idea how to make one. I'm using my Linksys router which allows me to connect to Internet via wireless lan or ethernet lan. Everything works on my Fedora Core 7, but it doesn't want to work on DSL. Would anyone please help me resolve this problem?

You don't say what kind of hardware you're using. Your Linksys router is further upstream, and will probably only provide you with a DHCP address.

What does dmesg say about network interfaces?? Try to run a "dmesg | grep net". If your hardware isn't identified, DSL might not be able to pick it up and use it, which would explain why it works under Fedora. What driver(s) do your NICs use under Fedora?

1st off all - thank you guys for your replay, I really appreciate it.
Actually I'm using two computers. 1st one have Fedora Core 7 and Broadcom wifi card on the board. This computer works really good. 2nd have Windows installed on the hdd and I'm using DSL from pendrive periodically - from time to time on it. I'm not sure what ethernet and wireless card it has built in right now, but I'll check that in few hours (I'm starting my work now) and post replay ASAP. I hope it will help somehow resolve my problem.

From a lspci command I can see that I have a "Intel Corporation 82573L" network card wich is pretty much the same what I'm getting from Windows.
Device Manager says that I have:
Intel PRO/1000 PL Network Connection and
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection cards

So, from that you said before ... it seems that I havn't got some network drivers installed in my system. Am I right?

I think the driver for that card is the e1000 module. Try (as root) insmod e1000. It's possible that they don't include a lot of the modules on a distro that fits on a usb stick, however. You may have to install or boot a disk based distro to get it to work.

I'd download a cd iso from something like Ubuntu, burn it to a CD and boot from that. I suspect Ubuntu will find the network card.

ok, I think I should now install module e1000 but how can I do this. I'm using 2.4 kernel, maybe it would help if I could compile 2.6 kernel? But how can I do this on DSL?

I don't think you are going to get any help with a 2.4 kernel. Upgrade your distro to something with a 2.6 kernel. I'd install a more mainstream distro if I were you. There's a lot more help available for Centos, Fedora, Debian Ubuntu and SuSE plus others. Even puppy would be better.
