Installing with a usb cd-drive

I'm trying to install ubuntu onto my computer but all I have at the moment is an external usb cd-drive, my internal dvd burner just died. How do I boot up from a usb cd drive? Are there any bootdisks that will recognize a usb cd-drive?

Your bios has to support booting via USB for that to work. Or alternatively as you mentioned...using a boot diskette. That is something I have never done, however I am sure a google search or two ought to turn up a disk that does that.

yea I've been looking for a bootdisket off of google but haven't found anything yet, I'm pretty bad at finding the right key words to search.

well I found a different solution. I found something on ubuntuforums.org that explained how to load the installer from a HD and that worked well. But now I am having problems partitioning my SATA hd. It recognizes the HD and starts to partitions it but than it says failed to load ext3 or something along those lines.

ext3 is the filesystem that Linux uses. That's a big error if it can't load it.
