How to tell Update Manager I do not want a certain package EVER!
A couple of days ago Canonical sent forth a recommended update package ttf-mscorefonts-installer. The package description contains
Quote:
NOTE: the package ttf-liberation contains free variants of the Times, Arial and Courier fonts. It's better to use those instead unless you specifically need one of the other fonts from this package.
Agreed. I do NOT need nor want these fonts. So I unselect the package and install the other security and other update.
Next time I run Update Manager the offending package is again in the list and I must uncheck it from the packages list. I would rather not do this every time for the next 2 years that 10.04 is supported. Is there a way to fake out Update Manager so it thinks this has been installed and does not try to install it with each update?
Thanks corp769! That looks like it will do the trick. However, synaptic shows the package as installed(?) I will restore my OS from a recent snap shot before the package was released and see if the trick works when the package is really not installed.
Thanks again for your prompt reply. I have done a little more investigation of this package. Seems it is already installed. Probably was when I installed the restricted-extras when I first built the machine. The update has a link to a bug which reports
Quote:
When installing Ubuntu-Restricted-Extras, the user never has a chance to see the EULA that comes with the Microsoft Fonts. Can this be fixed in the package?
so it appears that the only purpose of the update is to display the EULA for the package which is already installed.
As to the fix to blacklist an update, that works like a charm. I will mark the thread resolved and decide what to do with the offending (offensive?) Microsoft package.
