What version of Ubuntu are you using? Unity is possible under 10.10 and standard under 11.04 and 11.10-testing. All have slightly different setups that will effect the answer to your question.

Well that's unfortunate...

Did you do anything that you think might have taken it away?

When you are logging in, what session are booting in? It's down at the bottom of the screen when you type in your password.

Did you try adding any themes or customizations to Unity? If so, then remove them and see if Unity is fixed.
Otherwise, try reinstalling the Ubuntu desktop metapackage:
Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop
If that does not work, then try creating a new user for Ubuntu. Then reboot and login as the new user. If Unity works under the new user's profile, but not your own, then there is some hidden configuration file for Unity in your home directory that is messed up.
All configuration files in your home directory are hidden because they start with a period. If you click to show hidden files in your home directory you can see them.

There is no 'optimus driver', there is just nVidia drivers.

There are a lot of folks that are not native English speakers here. Do you really think they can understand that. Four more key strokes will not hurt you. They will make your nuggets of wisdom accessible to most folks.

*edit- it would also be nice to use the default font colour, rather than playing with red/blue/a neat shade of off white fonts.

Because nVidia cant be bothered writing drivers?

I will say in sort of defence of nVidia that optimus could be a real $^@^# to support, since in most cases the nVidia GPU isnt even connected directly to the video output......

BTW, unity is just a dekstop, it doesnt make any difference if you are using unity, gnome, KDE, Xfce, Lxde, one of the *box, etc..

nVidia is 'able' to support optimus for linux (and BSD, etc.), they just arent 'willing'.

When I installed the extra driver for nvidia, reboot and it prompts me that Unity is not supported for the driver installed, and back to conventional gnome desktop.
