Download the .deb package then use dpkg -i package name to install it or if you have gdebi installed just click on it.

http://files.avast.com/files/linux/a...3.0-2_i386.deb

why bother with an AV?

You follow the instructions provided to you. See:
http://www.debianadmin.com/avast-ant...u-desktop.html

Also note:

It is an ongoing annoyance that responsible folk must act to protect windows.

If you just want an AV solution - try the ones in the repositories. They install the easiest.

sudo apt-get install clamav

Just untar the archive in a directory (tar -zxvf avast4workstation.tar.gz), than navigate to the bin directory and run avastgui.

Why Would you go the hard way and download a tar.gz package when you can just as easily get a .deb package from Avast!?
