Gnome, Ubuntu 8.04 and startup Scripts

I know about system-------->Preferences----------->Sessions, I know of /etc/init.d/rc1-5.d,~.xinitrc file, rc.local,.Autostart and etc. My question is where in Ubuntu (Debian Based) as stupid as it maybe but what is the file that control startup scripts? I am using GNOME. I would like to start an script when I login to GNOME desktop? This is just for personal knowledge. thanks
